Cold Spring Harbor, New York

A pond worth
saving together.

St. John's Pond has shaped this community for three centuries. Today, it needs us. The St. John's Pond Watershed Alliance is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to its restoration and permanent stewardship.

"We stand at a threshold, not past one. Restoration is still possible — and action now prevents irreversible loss."

The Story

One of the most
photographed places
on Long Island.

From its origins as St. John's Lake in the late 17th century, to the childhood memories of winter ice skating and spring fishing — this pond is woven into the fabric of Cold Spring Harbor life. It is a living ecosystem, a landmark, and a shared inheritance.

The Urgency

A hundred-year-old
dam is failing.

The wooden spillway weir at the heart of the dam — constructed in the early 20th century — is deteriorating rapidly. A single board has already failed. Without intervention, the dam could empty twelve feet of water into Cold Spring Harbor, devastating a thriving ecosystem and permanently altering the landscape.

Science & Stewardship

Guided by
rigorous science.

SJPWA works with GEI Consultants — limnologists and ecologists — and Verdantas, the civil engineers leading dam and weir repair. Every decision is grounded in data, from field surveys and water quality analysis to structural engineering assessment.

"The pond is not simply a scenic amenity. It is a functioning freshwater ecosystem that sustains diverse plant and animal communities — and it can be restored."
